How Can I Become a Competitive Candidate Without Job Experience?

January 26, 2022

Finding a job can be hard enough as it is, and this task only gets more challenging if you’re fresh out of school looking to join the workforce or get into a new field.

The good news is that getting hired without work experience isn’t impossible if you follow these tips:

  • Highlight your transferable experience: If you’re trying to change careers, be sure to highlight your transferable work experience in your resume, cover letter and any interviews. Look through your current duties and skills to see which tasks will be relevant in your new desired role.
  • Emphasize your soft skills: Soft skills, like communication, organization, problem-solving and time management, are always transferrable regardless of industry. Be sure to note those skills on your resume and cover letter.
  • Build a network: Never underestimate the power of networking! Reach out to professionals in your desired position over social media or email, and invite them out for coffee. More often than not, these people will be more than happy to give you some tips on how to land your job.
  • Consider lower-paid or unpaid positions: Getting hired without work experience may mean taking a pay cut at the beginning or even working in an unpaid role for a while. Working your way up from the bottom isn’t easy, but it looks great on your resume.
  • Express your motivation: Employers aren’t just looking for candidates who want to receive a paycheck. Instead, they’re looking for driven individuals who want to excel in their new position. Showcasing your motivation in your cover letter and in interviews goes a long way in landing your new job.
  • Showcase your own projects: If you’re looking for a role in a creative position, like copywriting, make an online portfolio of your projects, and post all of your writing samples on your website. Even though these side projects might not be real-world work experience, they help demonstrate your passion and skills.
  • Go back to school: If you’re looking to start a brand-new career, your best option may be going back to school for a degree or certification in the field. While you’re taking classes, be sure to network with professors and classmates to help yourself get into the workforce after graduation.
  • Keep applying for roles: Applying for job after job without getting an offer can be a grind, but even if you don’t feel quite qualified for the role, it can’t hurt to apply. Set a schedule, and apply for a few jobs each week—you’ll eventually hear back from some of them and get a few interviews.
