Eight Common Resume Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

January 5, 2022

Your resume is your first impression to potential employers. If you don’t get it right, you won’t get the job. Many people miss out on employment opportunities because they make common resume mistakes. That doesn’t have to be your fate.

Use the best resume tips below to create a polished resume that can help you land your dream job.

Errors

It may sound obvious, but typos and grammatical errors are one of the biggest resume mistakes. Your resume should be grammatically perfect and without any typing errors. Take the time to carefully proof your resume (and ask someone else to look it over, too).

Generic approach

Yes, it’s time-consuming to tailor your resume to each job application, but it’s a must. Resumes are not a one-size-fits-all tool. One of the best resume tips is to create a resume specifically designed for each job to which you apply.

Vague descriptions

Your resume should communicate what you’ve accomplished. Go beyond obvious job descriptions, and let the reader know what you’ve done. Provide details about your roles and duties that let potential employers know more about your skills and talents.

List of duties

Don’t simply list your previous job duties. Potential employers don’t want to read a job description. They want to know what you’re capable of and what you can contribute to their organization. Provide specific examples of how you contributed to other companies and what you accomplished.

Lack of action verbs

As you write about your accomplishments, use words that demonstrate initiative and accomplishment. Rather than “responsible for” use verbs such as “increased,” “developed,” “resolved” and other action words that emphasize achievement.

Wrong length

Avoid cutting yourself short or rambling on too long. If you have more than a single page of accomplishments, expand to two pages. Don’t omit important information simply to keep your resume to one page; however, if it goes on for more than two pages, you’re probably including irrelevant information.

Unprofessional format

Avoid making your resume too busy. It should be easy on the eyes. Stick to one type of font and a format that is easy to scan. Consider showing it to a friend or two, and ask if they think it is visually appealing.

Incorrect contact info

If you get the rest of your resume right, but make this resume mistake, you might never hear from a potential employer. Triple-check your contact info, and make sure it is current and correct.

Here’s a helpful bonus tip: Consider your email address. Is it professional and easy to remember? If you’ve been using hotrodZ1978@hotmail.com for years, consider setting up a new address you can use for job applications, such as johnsmith@gmail.com. You can keep your hotrod address, too. Just reserve it for personal rather than professional use.
