How the Coronavirus Is Affecting the Job Market

March 27, 2020

It’s the topic on everyone’s minds today: the coronavirus. Specifically, many people are wondering how the coronavirus is affecting jobs in Fort Lauderdale, FL and beyond. Will this virus increase unemployment? Will it halt the hiring process? As we look at the job market overall, there are several aspects that will be affected.

Hiring process

Due to recommendations for social distancing and orders to shelter in place, employers are changing their processes for hiring new employees. At least for now, employers are moving to video interviews and other online solutions to vet potential hires. This minimal contact reduces the risk of spreading the virus, keeping the potential employee and human resources staff safe.

Once employees are hired, many companies are offering online training sessions rather than in-person training that they would otherwise host. Even after this training is complete, many employees have been instructed to work from home for now.

Safety standards

Throughout the hiring process, training and ongoing operations, employers are taking extra safety precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. Employees are washing hands more often, using more hand sanitizer and practicing social distancing measures. Additionally, high-traffic areas are being cleaned more frequently and thoroughly.

Hard-hit industries

In an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, many public places have temporarily closed or greatly reduced their operations. Restaurants, bars, movie theaters and other entertainment venues are being hit hard by the virus.

Of course, this means the coronavirus is affecting jobs in Fort Lauderdale, FL significantly in these industries. Some companies are able to pay employees for the temporary layoffs, but not all. Some employees will have to look for other work to make ends meet. Some businesses may close due to the loss of income during shelter-in-place orders.

It’s too soon to tell how far-reaching these effects will be. Industries may bounce back and be stronger than ever as people embrace a new appreciation for the ability to gather and socialize. Others may suffer too much financial strain and forever change they way they do business. Time will tell.

Booming industries

While some businesses are struggling to survive the COVID-19 pandemic, other industries are experiencing an influx of business. Delivery services, pharmacies, grocery stores and other businesses deemed “essential” during shelter-in-place orders are thriving. “Now hiring” signs can be seen on windows and websites.

As with the businesses that are struggling, it’s hard to tell whether this increase in sales will continue for these industries once we are past the coronavirus threat. For now, production lines are being rerouted to focus on in-demand items, employers are hiring to boost staff for in-demand positions and everyone is scrambling to stay on top of current needs.
